**Medical Assistant Job Description**

The Medical Assistant helps manage how customers move through the clinic and supports the healthcare providers in caring for these customers. Customers can be of different ages and backgrounds, including babies, children, teens, adults, and older people.

 The Medical Assistant focuses on working together with others and doing assigned tasks as outlined in the Blaze Health Medical Assistant guidelines. The tasks that can be assigned depend on the supervising nurse and provider, as set by the Minnesota Board of Nursing and the Minnesota Board of Medical Practice. 

The Medical Assistant works closely with the Clinic Supervisor, Clinic Manager, and Providers to achieve the goals of the customers and the clinic. It is important for the Medical Assistant to communicate with the healthcare team about any progress, concerns, or questions that come up.

**Clinical Care Responsibilities:**

The Medical Assistant will do both clinical (healthcare-related) and clerical (office-related) tasks to help customers in the clinic. This includes:

- Preparing rooms for patients

- Giving immunizations, injections, and other medications as directed by the provider

- Collecting lab samples when needed

Depending on the clinic’s specialty and location, the Medical Assistant may also do the following:

- Provide support via phone

- Help communicate between customers and providers

- Assist with prescription refills

- Perform x-ray duties if the individual passed the x-ray exam

- Do blood draws (phlebotomy) - Conduct clinic laboratory tests

**Clinic Support Responsibilities:**

The Medical Assistant may also support the clinic by:

- Helping at the front desk/check-in area

- Ordering and stocking supplies

- Assisting with prior authorizations (getting permission for certain medical services)

**General Duties:**

The Medical Assistant needs to show skill in the tasks outlined in the NMH Medical Assistant guidelines. They must keep improving their skills and learn new ones as required. 

The Medical Assistant takes direction from the Physician, Provider, Registered Nurse, Clinic Supervisor, and Clinic Manager.

**Compliance:**

- Protects customer and team member privacy and only accesses information when necessary for their job.

- Reports any issues or concerns to their supervisor or Corporate Compliance Officer using the proper communication methods.

- Follows all legal and procedural requirements connected to their responsibilities.

**Qualifications**

**Education:**

- Must be a High School graduate or have an equivalent (like a GED).

- Must have completed a Medical Assistant program approved by a recognized organization (ABHES or CAAHEP).

**Experience:**

- Must have previous experience in a clinical setting.

- Must pass the x-ray operator exam or be willing to take it based on clinic needs.

**Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:**

- Must be able to manage multiple tasks efficiently.

- Must know how to use computer software.

**Travel:**

- Must be able to travel using a personal vehicle to different local work sites. (This applies only for Occupational Medicine.)

**Required Licensure or Certification:**

- Must have current BLS (Basic Life Support) certification.

**Certification Requirements:**

- BLS certification is required.
