Location: Chicago
Employment Type: Full-time

About Skybox Capital

Skybox Capital is a dynamic family office and private equity firm investing across the capital structure, with a focus on middle-market private equity and incubating innovative businesses. Our diverse portfolio spans operating companies, private equity funds, credit, and real assets. We value curiosity, initiative, and a drive to learn — and we're looking for someone who shares those values.

The Role

We're seeking an experienced Accounting Manager to lead our finance operations team. You'll oversee a distributed team of staff and senior accountants across our U.S. and Philippines offices, ensuring accuracy, efficiency, and continuous improvement in our accounting processes. This is a technical leadership role where deep accounting knowledge meets data systems expertise — you'll build the infrastructure and quality controls that allow our team to scale.

Working directly with our Controller, you'll be responsible for developing audit trails, implementing review processes, and leveraging technology to automate and optimize workflows. A key aspect of this role is your ability to understand new businesses and investment structures as they enter our portfolio, then design and implement the accounting processes, controls, and systems needed to properly record and report their financial activity.  A core part of this role is the ability to understand how a business actually operates and build the appropriate accounting processes, controls, and systems around those operations.

This position is ideal for someone who thrives at the intersection of accounting, technology, and team development, and who wants to shape how a growing family office manages complex financial operations.

What You'll Do

Team Leadership

  • Manage and develop a team of staff and senior accountants across U.S. and offshore locations
  • Establish clear processes, workflows, and accountability systems
  • Conduct performance reviews and provide ongoing coaching and mentorship
  • Foster a culture of accuracy, continuous improvement, and professional growth

Process Design & Implementation

  • Assess the operations and business models of newly acquired entities or investments
  • Design tailored accounting processes, chart of accounts structures, and workflows for new portfolio companies
  • Build scalable systems that accommodate the unique characteristics of each business while maintaining consistency across the portfolio
  • Translate complex business operations into appropriate accounting treatments and controls
  • Create documentation and training materials to onboard new entities into our accounting framework

Process & Quality Control

  • Design and implement audit processes to ensure data integrity across all accounting functions
  • Build multi-layered review workflows to catch errors before they reach financial statements
  • Develop standard operating procedures and documentation for all accounting processes
  • Identify process inefficiencies and implement solutions to improve speed and accuracy

Technical Accounting & Systems

  • Oversee month-end close, journal entries, and account reconciliations across multiple entities
  • Ensure proper recording and reporting for complex investment structures
  • Write SQL queries to extract, analyze, and validate financial data from NetSuite and other systems
  • Partner with IT and operations teams to integrate accounting systems and automate workflows
  • Leverage AI and automation tools to reduce manual work and improve data quality

Financial Reporting & Collaboration

  • Support the Controller in producing accurate and timely financial statements
  • Collaborate with investment, tax, and operations teams on cross-functional projects
  • Assist with ad hoc analysis and special projects as the firm continues to grow

What You Bring

Required:

  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 2 years in a supervisory or management role
  • Strong technical accounting knowledge (GAAP, consolidations, multi-entity structures)
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze how a business operates and design end-to-end accounting processes, workflows, and controls that accurately reflect the underlying economic activity of the entity from the ground up
  • Experience building accounting frameworks for new entities, acquisitions, or diverse business models
  • Proficiency in SQL for data extraction, analysis, and validation
  • Experience with NetSuite or similar ERP systems
  • Proven ability to design and implement internal controls and audit procedures
  • Experience managing remote or offshore teams
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance (CPA preferred but not required)

Ideal:

  • Background in private equity, investment funds, family office, or financial services
  • Experience onboarding acquired companies or integrating disparate accounting systems
  • Experience with Bill.com, treasury management, or investment accounting
  • Comfort with AI tools and accounting automation platforms
  • Ability to translate complex accounting issues into clear explanations for non-finance stakeholders

Personal Attributes:

  • Detail-oriented with a commitment to accuracy and quality
  • Systems thinker who can see the big picture while managing the details
  • Analytical problem-solver who can understand diverse business models and translate them into accounting processes
  • Self-starter who thrives in fast-paced, entrepreneurial environments
  • Strong communicator who can lead teams across time zones and cultures
  • Tech-savvy problem solver who embraces new tools and methods
  • Adaptable and curious — excited by the challenge of learning new businesses and industries
