Position Summary

Southwest Florida Proton is seeking a full-time Radiation Therapist – Proton Therapy to provide safe, accurate, and high-quality proton radiation therapy treatments using the IBA ProteusONE® proton therapy system. The Radiation Therapist is responsible for treatment delivery in accordance with physician prescriptions, approved treatment plans, and all applicable state, federal, and accrediting body regulations.

This role supports patient-centered oncology care while maintaining strict compliance with ARRT standards, Florida Department of Health licensure requirements, radiation safety regulations, and organizational policies. The position is based in Fort Myers, Florida, serving patients throughout Southwest Florida, and requires close collaboration with Radiation Oncologists, Medical Physicists, Dosimetrists, Nurses, and other members of the multidisciplinary cancer care team.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Clinical Treatment Delivery

  • Administer proton radiation therapy treatments as prescribed by the Radiation Oncologist and documented in the treatment plan.
  • Accurately position patients using immobilization devices, imaging systems, and treatment verification protocols.
  • Perform CT simulations for radiation treatment planning according to departmental policies and procedures.
  • Operate the IBA ProteusONE® proton therapy system, CT simulation equipment, and associated imaging technology safely and effectively.
  • Verify treatment parameters prior to delivery and ensure accuracy of treatment setup and delivery.
  • Accurately document all treatment data, imaging, and patient interactions in the electronic medical record (EMR).

Patient Care & Safety

  • Provide compassionate, professional care to patients and families, clearly explaining procedures and addressing questions or concerns.
  • Monitor patients during treatment delivery and respond appropriately to changes in patient condition or comfort.
  • Assist patients on and off the treatment couch safely, maintaining patient dignity and proper body mechanics.

Quality, Compliance & Regulatory Responsibilities

  • Adhere to all radiation safety policies, ALARA principles, and applicable federal and state regulations.
  • Maintain compliance with ARRT certification standards, Florida Radiation Therapy licensure requirements, and accreditation standards (e.g., Joint Commission, ACR/APEx-RT).
  • Participate in quality assurance activities, safety checks, and performance improvement initiatives.
  • Promptly report treatment variances, equipment malfunctions, or safety concerns in accordance with established procedures.

Professional Practice & Team Collaboration

  • Work collaboratively with Radiation Oncologists, Medical Physicists, Dosimetrists, Nurses, and support staff to ensure optimal patient outcomes.
  • Participate in required staff meetings, training, continuing education, and competency assessments.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and professional conduct in accordance with HIPAA and organizational policies.

Education & Certification Requirements

  • Associate’s degree or higher OR certificate in Radiation Therapy from an accredited program.
  • Current ARRT certification in Radiation Therapy with full continuing education (CE) compliance.
  • Active State of Florida Radiation Therapy license in good standing.
  • Current BLS/CPR certification required.

Experience Requirements

  • Three (3) years of experience as a certified Radiation Therapist preferred.
  • One (1) year of proton therapy experience preferred.
  • Experience with the following equipment and technologies:
    • Proton Therapy Technology (IBA ProteusONE® preferred)
    • CT scanners for simulation

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Functional computer literacy, including proficiency with Microsoft Word.
  • Experience using electronic medical record (EMR) systems.
  • Strong understanding of radiation therapy principles and patient positioning techniques.
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to follow complex treatment plans.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to work independently while supporting a collaborative clinical environment.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift, move, and assist patients to and from the treatment couch.
  • Ability to lift up to 30 pounds unassisted and 50 pounds assisted.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, and perform repetitive motions throughout the workday.
