About Us
Project Sankofa is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the educational experiences of Black students and educators in racially isolated communities. We focus on resource development, program design and implementation, and research that address the unique challenges faced by Black students and educators across the educational pipeline.

Our Mission
Our mission is to empower young Black individuals, by Black individuals, throughout the diaspora. We strive to enhance students' lives from high school through early careers — especially in spaces where representation and belonging are limited.

Our Vision
To serve as a guiding light for belonging, empowerment, and self-efficacy for Black students and Black women, particularly in suburban and underrepresented spaces.

Our Work
Project Sankofa is home to award-winning initiatives that reimagine what equity and excellence in education look like:

  • The Next Black Educator Workforce (NBEW) — a transformative pipeline initiative that recruits, develops, credentials, and retains Black educators across California and beyond.
  • The African American Scholars Project (AASP) — a school-based leadership and identity development program that supports high school students in their academic, emotional, and college readiness journeys.

Together with our university, district, and community partners, we are creating pathways that connect education, equity, and empowerment—ensuring Black students and educators can thrive, lead, and build sustainable futures.

Our Motto:
For Us. By Us. To Us. Through Us.
